In keeping with an established annual tradition, Chopard is devoting a new limited series of its L.U.C XP Urushi watch to the Chinese Zodiac: the L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Rooster. The Chinese new year, which begins on January 28th 2017, appears under the sign of the Yin metal rooster, the theme depicted on an exceptional lacquered dial made using the ancestral Urushi technique. It is hand-crafted in Japan by a master lacquer artist.



The rooster is a divine messenger, heralding the dawn and crowing to chase away demons. It is considered honest and frank, two qualities that those born under this Earth sign are believed to share. These resourceful and quick-witted individuals naturally tend to work in fields which involve making diagnoses and maintaining order. Full of energy and naturally pugnacious, the rooster adopts an active and perseverant attitude. He is endowed with excellent oratory skills and loves to give advice... to the point of not listening to that given by others, whom he instinctively distrusts.





Preserving an ancestral skill
In Japanese tradition, the sap of the "lacquer" or "Japanese varnish" tree is skilfully harvested, aged and treated to become a lacquer. This extremely hard material is applied in a number of extremely thin layers. The Urushi master uses it to imprison tiny purpose-cut mother-of-pearl fragments, which further enhance the dial of the L.U.C XP Year of the Rooster with their iridescence and radiance. The animal is depicted in all its majestic splendour, head held high and feathers puffed out, against a glowing sunset backdrop. Alongside it are eight gladioli symbolising good luck.




Chopard has worked with its loyal partner: the Yamada Heiando firm which is an official purveyor to the Japanese Imperial Family. Together, they have called upon the services of Master Kiichiro Masumura, acknowledged as the finest exponent of his art. Raised to the rank of "living human treasure" in Japan, he designed and supervised the creation of all the dials, which were personally executed by the highly skilled Urushi master Minori Koizumi.



Techncal Specifications:
The case, in 18kt rose gold, measures 39.5mm x 6.8mm. It has an AR-coated sapphire crystal, a sapphire display back, and it is water resistant to 30 meters.



Movement is the Swiss automatic Chopard in-house caliber L.U.C. 96.17L with 29 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 65 hours featuring twin barrels. 22kt gold bevelled, engraved and guilloché micro-rotor.



It has bevelled and polished chamfers, polished screws, a circular-grained mainplate, and bridges adorned with Côtes de Genève motif.



Dial hand-crafted in Japan using the Urushi lacquer technique and mother-of-pearl marquetry, with a special "Year of the Rooster" motif. Gilded Dauphine-type hours and minutes hands.

It comes on a 19mm hand-sewn black alligator leather strap with an 18kt rose gold buckle.

Vacheron Constantin is enriching its Métiers d'Art collection with the new "legend of the Chinese zodiac sign of the rooster". The latter will take over from that of the monkey at the Chinese New Year on January 28th 2017.

Paper-cutting, at the crossroads between Eastern and Western cultures
China, a nation with which Vacheron Constantin has been cultivating special ties since 1845, first introduce the paper-cutting technique known as Jianzhi, a popular art echoed in Swiss culture through its famous Scherenschnitt paper-cutting. This artistic approach, highlighted in this watch, has been given a fresh interpretation thanks to the expertise of the master engravers and enamellers.

Allied artistic crafts
The foliage motif appearing on the dial and based on classic Chinese iconography is etched directly in the metal. The pattern remains semi-embedded and stands out from its gold base by a subtle stage-setting of variously accentuating reliefs creating a depth effect. This makes the vegetation appear to be floating over the dial.

Then comes the stage of Grand Feu enamelling, an ancestral technique that remains the preserve of a very few particularly skilled artisans. By applying the enamel in successive layers, the enamel specialist enhances the intensity of the blue or bronze-toned dial. Achieving the necessary mastery of colour and of reactions to firing at temperatures between 800 and 900 degrees Celsius calls for an expertise that can only be acquired over long years of experience. The rooster, made of platinum or pink gold, is hand engraved and delicately applied to the dial center.


Technical Specifications:
The case, in 18kt rose gold, or in platinum, measures 40mm x 12.7mm. It has double sapphire crystals and it is water resistant to 30 meters.

Movement is the Swiss automatic Vacheron in-house caliber 2460 G4 with 27 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 40 hours. It has a 22kt engraved gold rotor. All movement components are finely finished in accordance with the criteria of the Hallmark of Geneva. Functions are: hours, minutes, day of the week and date in apertures.



The dial is 18kt gold, hand-engraved with Grand Feu enameling, and a hand-engraved platinum or 18kt rose gold gold rooster. The hands-free time display has four apertures showing the hours, minutes, day and date.



It comes on a dark blue or brown Mississippiensis alligator leather strap with alligator inner shell, hand-stitched, saddle-finish, large square scales and an 18kt rose gold or platinum folding clasp.



It is delivered with a corrector pen, a magnifying glass and a dedicated brochure to better showcase the craftsmanship and the technicality behind these creations.

In a nod to its past, TUDOR is now offering the Pelagos model in a "left-handed" version, with its winding stem on the left of the middle case so that it can be worn on the right wrist. TUDOR had already produced watches of this type at the specific request of diving professionals, for example for the French Navy.



Divers' watches, intended to be worn specifically on the right wrist, require specific ergonomic characteristics. Before the advent of this watch, left-handed divers could be seen wearing their watch turned upside down on their right wrist and were only able to use the minutes elapsed calculating function, leaving the dominant hand free to access the winder. The introduction of this new model into the Pelagos line, named LHD for Left Hand Drive, means that TUDOR is able to offer a complete range of technical divers' watches at the same time as bringing a little-known part of its product development history to light.



Technical Specifications:
The case, in satin-finished titanium with steel, measures 42mm. It has a sapphire crystal. Titanium unidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel with ceramic matt black disc and graduations with beige luminescent coating. Titanium screw-down winding crown at 9 o'clock with the Tudor logo in relief. Automatic helium escape valve at 3 o'clock. It is water resistant to 500 meters.



Each model has a unique production number engraved in large Arabic numerals on the case back. This is a first for Tudor.



Movement is the Swiss automatic Tudor in-house caliber MT5612LHD with 26 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 70 hours. It features a bidirectional rotor system, variable inertia balance, micro-adjusted by screw. Non-magnetic silicon balance spring. It is COSC-certified as a chronometer. This is a specific variant of the Tudor manufactured movement developed for the Pelagos LHD model.



The dial is black with date at 3 o'clock and luminous hands and markers. The dial of this new Pelagos watch has been reworked with beige luminescent markings and the name "PELAGOS" in red at 6 o'clock. The calendar disc, in beige too, also comes in a new design, with its numbers displayed in alternate colors: the even days are displayed in red and the odd in black. This aesthetic detail, nicknamed "roulette" by collectors, was especially characteristic of TUDOR divers' watches with its dial and "snowflakes" hands that first appeared in reference 7021 in 1969.



It comes on a titanium bracelet with folding clasp and safety catch in steel with bracelet extension system developed and patented by Tudor. Additional rubber strap with buckle
and extra extension piece included in the box.

The highlight of the auction is "The Theater Visit," an ivory fan featuring a concealed enamel watch made for The Qing Royal family. Offered for the first time at auction, the unique and magnificent fan is attributed to James Cox. Made in the late 18th century, the 20K gold ivory, turquoise and enamel fan is engraved with an elaborate floral motif filigree. The main leaf is painted with a scene of royals visiting a lush garden and theater; and the reverse painted with landscape depicting a courtesan with her servant beside her. The fan pivot contains the watch and the back features an enamel painted scene of a landscape with a fisherman in the foreground.

Another top highlight of the sale is the Jaquet Droz Early "Perpetuelle" Self-Winding, Pocket Watch for the Chinese Market. The present watch by the legendary maker Jaquet Droz is a rare example with an early self-winding mechanism (referred to as a "perpetuelle") and only one or two other examples with such mechanism by Droz are known. Made circa 1785, it is a very rare gold, enamel, pearl and ruby set pocket watch with center seconds. The lavishly jeweled case and the center seconds suggest that this watch was marketed for export to China. Although made in Switzerland, the piece is signed "Jaquet Droz London" as many other of his pieces destined for the Far East at the time; a clever business strategy by Droz since pieces from London were regarded as superior quality and commanded higher prices .

The first pieces of the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds in platinum have recently been delivered to the dealers of A. Lange & Söhne.

The typical regulator dial, the classic jumping seconds mechanism, the constant-force escapement and the Zero-Reset mechanism come together in a reinterpretation of the scientific observation watch.



For ten years, the name Richard Lange has stood for a continually growing watch family. It convincingly transitions the scientific observation watch, a genre traditionally nurtured by A. Lange & Söhne, from the past to the present. Additionally, its name pays tribute to Ferdinand Adolph Lange's firstborn son. Born in 1845, Richard Lange adopted his father's legacy by translating the latest insights in physics, chemistry and mathematics into numerous technical developments. Many of his patents were embodied in the manufactory's technically elaborate pocket watches.



Presented in January 2016, the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds broadens the watch family with a model including a classic function that was once a feature of A. Lange & Söhne's historic pocket watches. Its newly developed L094.1 manufacture calibre is endowed with this complication (also referred to as seconde morte), and has an innovative constant-force escapement.



The mechanism utilises the switching impulse of the jumping seconds integrated in the wheel train to deliver fresh energy to the remontoir spring of the constant-force escapement. In a separate wheel train between the mainspring barrel and the escapement, the constant-force mechanism compensates the gradually declining power of the mainspring. It assures virtually constant torque and a stable amplitude across the entire power-reserve period of up to 42 hours.

The Zero-Reset mechanism allows the watch to be quickly and comfortably synchronised with a time signal. The rhodié-colored regulator dial features a prominent seconds circle. It is housed in platinum case measuring 39.9mm. A small aperture at the intersection of the hour and minute circles reminds the owner when it is time to wind the watch: the display switches to red ten hours in advance.

In the movement, hand-finished to the strictest Lange standards, the technical processes are easily observable through the sapphire-crystal caseback. A five-point star, that controls the seconds jumps, rotates beneath a transparent sapphire bearing jewel in the middle of the mirror-polished end piece.

The remontoir spring of the constant-force escapement can be seen through an opening in the three-quarter plate. The levers, springs and clutch of the Zero-Reset mechanism are visible as well.

The Skull Axl Rose is a custom model created by Axl Rose. The artist chose a Skull base which, under his direction, was given a Damascus steel style treatment. In addition, he requested that this was given a blue treatment. For a complementary touch, Axl opted same color for all the indexes applied around the Skull. Finally, he chose to affix two side plates to the piece (at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock), decorated with the Clous de Paris pattern and also finished in blue PVD.
 
The case, in DLC titanium, measures 51mm x 17.9mm. Rubber sheathed screw-down DLC titanium crown, black DLC titanium dome at 6 o'clock. Side plate (3 o'clock/9 o'clock) with blue PVD Clous de Paris decoration. Domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the dial side. Screw-down metallised sapphire case-back with Guns'N'Roses logo transfer signed by Axl Rose. It is water resistant to 50 meters.



Movement is the Swiss manual-wind HYT in-house caliber with 35 jewels, 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 65 hours. The bridges are hand-bevelled and adorned with Côtes de Genève and rhodium-plated bellows.
 
Dial is unstructured, with rhodium-plated Clous de Paris stud pattern, blue PVD appliques, hours indicated by a fluid. Skull made from Damascus steel with blue PVD treatment. Black hour dial with grey indeces, seconds disc (left eye) and power reserve indicator (right eye).
 
It comes ona  black leather strap with adjustable cuff. Blue topstitching and a black DLC ardillon buckle.

H. Moser & Cie. with sister company Precision Engineering AG has launched a new alloy, PE5000. Shock resistant and paramagnetic, this material will be integrated for the first time in a very special edition of the Venturer Small Seconds XL, in a limited edition of 10 pieces.



H. Moser wwners may acquire these watches and take part in a series of tests to confirm the chronometric performance of this escapement of the future.



An alloy of niobium and titanium, PE5000 has highly valuable characteristics for the regulating organs of mechanical watches. As a paramagnetic material, it is extremely resilient and has such remarkable elastic properties that a hairspring made from this alloy is not affected by impacts. This is an invaluable asset for the oscillator in a mechanical watch, constantly in motion and subject to significant constraints.

The alloy of niobium and titanium has a great affinity for oxygen, which results in the challenge of greater wear on tooling; however, the manufacturing processes overall are similar to those for producing traditional hairsprings, in all steps taken to shape the material.

As a producer of regulating organs, Precision Engineering has the expertise needed for this new technology. PE5000 represents a very interesting alternative to silicon, which is also non-magnetic and shock resistant, with the disadvantage of not allowing any adjustments. Niobium-titanium, in contrast, can be adjusted by the watchmaker to optimise the watch's performance if necessary.



Precision Engineering joins the few manufacturers capable of producing paramagnetic escapements, a major advantage in the Swiss watch industry. With a new label, synonymous with quality and precision: Precinergy.

Blue, a color synonymous with quality in traditional watchmaking, is also used in the balance bridge and balance wheel, thanks to a special finish that gives depth to the escapement.

At the heart of the new Portsmouth is a new hand-wound, exclusive Garrick movement, designed by Garrick and the legendary movement specialist, Andreas Strehler. The movement parts are manufactured both in the UK and Switzerland. Thereafter, movement finishing, assembly and regulation takes place within Garrick's own Norfolk workshop.

Mike Horn will embark on his next adventure, Pole2Pole equipped with a Mercedes-Benz G-Class and his sailing vessel Pangaea, plus a Panerai on his wrist, he will attempt to become the first person to undergo a unique circumnavigation of the globe via the two poles over land and sea.



Mike Horn will begin his expedition from the Yacht Club of Monaco, from which he will sail his boat southwards to Namibia. From there, Horn will trade sails for wheels, where by means of the G-Class he will explore the world's oldest desert, the Namib. His route will then take him through the Okavango delta in Botswana, the world's largest inland delta. On to Horn's homeland South Africa, where he will research and dive with Great White Sharks, an ultimate predator but also a critical element of the marine ecosystem.



Afterwards Horn will sail to the Antarctic, which he will cross on skis via the South Pole. Crossing complete, he will navigate the Pacific through the islands of Oceania to Asia, where he will travel parts of New Zealand and Australia. In Papua New Guinea, the G-Class will await him for an expedition through the primordial equatorial forests. Once arrived in Asia onboard Pangaea, a further overland journey with the legendary off-road vehicle will unfold, leading Horn through the tundra in Kamchatka, before setting sails for the great north.



The extreme athlete will then attempt another crossing, this time of the Arctic via the North Pole. Following this, Mike will cross over the world's largest island, Greenland, after which he will conclude his adventure by navigating back to his point of departure, Monaco.

On his wrist will be a special edition watch from Officine Panerai.

It has a midnight blue dial with luminous Arabic numeral and applied hour marker dots coated with SuperLumiNova, it features the inscription POLE2POLE, printed in yellow and matching the second time zone hand and the small seconds dial at 9 o'clock.

Frederique Constant Analytics is a revolutionary device that measures the accuracy of mechanical watches.



With this new clip and the SwissConnect Analytics App, users can measure the accuracy of their mechanical watches. Previously, such measurements were possible only by watchmakers using professional instruments. Time Measurement Devices are normally extremely expensive and complicated to use. However, with the Frederique Constant Analytics clip, watch owners can measure the accuracy of a timepiece easily and efficiently by themselves; and in line with our Accessible Luxury philosophy, Frederique Constant presents Analytics at a very attractive price.

Accuracy
The hallmark of a great timepiece is accuracy. A measure of accuracy is a measure of value. Each mechanical timepiece has a tiny Balance Wheel that acts as a pendulum. Every oscillation back and forth should take exactly one second. But if the Balance Wheel mechanism is off by just a matter of a few degrees, the accuracy of the watch will suffer.



Measure
To start measuring the heartbeat of the timepiece, the ingenious Analytics Clip must be placed on the watch and the user must launch the SwissConnect Analytics App, available for iOS and Android. Within seconds, Frederique Constant Analytics measures the accuracy of the watch. It measures the precision of mechanical watches, with an accuracy of at least ±0.2s/day.

Visualize results
An oscilloscope shows the audio waveform in real time. The result is plotted in a chart, which can be saved for later reference.
Also, Analytics can record and save a long-time measurement, e.g. for 12 hours, to analyze the long-time performance of your watch.



Multiple watches
Frederique Constant Analytics supports a wide range of frequencies, covering almost all mechanical watches available on the market. In case the user doesn't know the watch's frequency, a frequency auto detect function is available on the app.

Track
Frederique Constant Analytics connects to the Cloud. When the user measures a watch, data is saved to his or her cloud account. Accuracy measurements can be tracked over time on a dashboard. Frederique Constant encourages every user to monitor their watch collection and record all measurements. This will enable them to follow their timepieces over the years and detect when each should be serviced.

Knowledge base
Frederique Constant offers a growing knowledge base on mechanical watch accuracy, maintenance and service. There are various reasons that the accuracy of a mechanical watch changes over time. Particularly the balance spring can change in strength from the micro-stresses to the metal they are made of. Moreover, watch escapements are lubricated with oils, and as those oils age, the rate of a mechanical watch changes as well.



Backup and restore
Once the user has registered his or her Private Account, the Analytics app will back up the watch's measurements to the cloud and keep data available anywhere. The user can easily restore data if he or she switches to a new smartphone.

A tireless traveller and insatiable creative spirit, Chopard
hopard draws inspiration for its latest creation from South America and the heart of the Inca civilization.



The dial cover is entirely set with brilliant-cut diamonds and turquoises in subtly varied shades. Its almost hypnotic radiance exudes an aura of mystery and seduction. What riches does it conceal? When the dial opens, the signature symbols of the Imperiale collection appear: Roman numerals, tapered hands reminiscent of combat daggers; as well as the famous motif evoking the embroideries adorning the hangings and cushions on which monarchs placed their insignia.
