INDUSTRY NEWS - Rare Patek Philippe Calatrava Sets Record

$

A rare Patek Philippe, Ref. 2526P, Calatrava with first series enamel dial, retailed by "Tiffany & Co.",circa 1954 sold for $642,500, a new world record for a Ref. 2526 of any precious metal, in Heritage Auctions' Watches & Fine Timepieces Auction, which took place on May 1 in New York City.

The 556-lot auction, with 93.2 percent of all lots sold, finished with $3,715,166 in total sales.

This fresh-to-market Calatrava, with a pre-auction estimate of $300,000, retailed in 1954, and is one of just six platinum 2526 watches known to exist. That limited number, coupled with the fact that it is the only known example with both Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. signatures makes it possibly the rarest Patek Philippe Ref. 2526 ever offered at auction, according to Heritage Auctions Director of Timepieces Jim Wolf.

"This is an extraordinary watch," Wolf said. "But having the dual Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. signatures means it might be the only one like it in the world, which makes it extremely appealing to the most serious collectors."

Arguably the most desirable of contemporary Patek Philippe watches, a Patek Philippe, Ref. 5970J-001, unused double sealed, gold chronograph with perpetual calendar, moonphases, tachometer and 24 hour indication, circa 2008 drew $137,500. Its relatively short production run of just seven years makes it a rarity in all four configurations: yellow, white and rose gold and platinum this yellow gold version is considered the rarest and most desirable of this legendary reference. It is the last Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph powered by the legendary Lemania movement, which is visible through the exhibition case back.

One of the fiercest bidding wars in the auction centered around a Patek Philippe, Ref. 3417, very rare steel amagnetic for Tiffany & Co, circa 1968, as 18 bidders drove it to more than five times its low pre-auction estimate before it closed at $106,250. The popularity and appeal of this extremely rare -- possibly even unique -- watch centers around the Patek Philippe Genève and Tiffany & Co. signatures on the dial.

Other top lots included, but were not limited to:

· Patek Philippe, Ref. 5070G-001, Unused Double Sealed, White Gold Chronograph, Circa 2008: $71,875

· Patek Philippe, Ref. 3800/3P, Platinum Nautilus, 38 mm, Circa 1992: $68,750

· Rolex, Ref: 4467, "Ovettone" Pre-DateJust, Luminous Dial and Hands, Circa 1947: $50,000

· Rolex, 18k YG Ref. 1675, GMT-Master, From The Private Collection Of Hollywood Actor James "Jimmy" Darren, circa 1972: $40,000

· Rolex Ref. 228206 Platinum Day-Date 40 President: $37,500

· Patek Philippe, Ref: 5059J-001,18k Gold Retrograde Perpetual Calendar, Circa 2005: $37,500

Spend a Day Learning Watchmaking, and Leave with a Watch You Built Yourself

The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) is hosting two "Build a Watch" classes in Las Vegas during the JCK Show on June 3rd and 4th, 2018. This class is a great opportunity for watch collectors, enthusiasts, and jewelry store staff and salespeople to step behind the bench and learn more about the watches they love.

This 6-hour class is a crash course in watchmaking. You'll begin with a disassembled Swiss ETA 6497 movement and learn about proper lubrication, adjustments, servicing, timing, and regulation as you assemble your watch. The final stage is adding the dial, hands, case, and straps. Seeing your watch go from a collection of parts to a beautiful wristwatch is a truly gratifying event that you need to experience.

Collectors leave with a deeper understanding of the watches they cherish, and store staff and salespeople leave this course knowing more about the timepieces they sell, what makes them tick, and the expertise it takes to repair them.

Not only do you leave with a better appreciation and understanding of watches, but you also get to take home the timepiece that you built with your own hands.

The classes will be held at the Vdara Hotel & Spa in Las Vegas on June 3rd from 4:00pm to10:00pm and June 4th from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Registration is $1,295. Register at the link below.

INDUSTRY NEWS - Walter Lange Watchmaking Excellence Award 2018

Ninth round for A. Lange & Söhne's international competition for young talent Eight young watchmakers from seven countries are taking part in the competition for the Walter Lange Watchmaking Excellence Award 2018. In the last week of April, the company invited them to attend a programme of workshops, at the end of which the competition task was revealed. The participants have until the end of October to develop an acoustic timepiece.

In the ninth year of its existence, the international competition for young watchmakers is being held under a new name. In honour of the company founder, who died at the beginning of 2017, the competition launched by A. Lange & Söhne in 2010 will be known as the Walter Lange Watchmaking Excellence Award from now on. The training of young watchmakers and the competition were matters especially close to Walter Lange's heart. Promoting young talent is the main focus of the competition in which the best students of renowned watchmaking schools from all over the world compete to win the 10,000-euro prize. The multistage process started with a call for applications, which was sent out to over 30 watchmaking schools at the beginning of the year. They could nominate up to three candidates, of whom the most qualified were invited to participate.

From 23 to 27 April 2018, the selected candidates from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Finland and Japan visited Dresden and Glashütte. The highlights of the varied programme included various workshops in the manufactory. Here, budding watchmakers were able to demonstrate their skills in manual techniques such as tremblage engraving and chamfer polishing under the expert guidance of engravers, finishing specialists and watchmakers. In addition, they assembled the automatic movement of a SAXONIA DUAL TIME, a task which due to the complexity of the movement and the sensitivity of German silver parts to being touched presents a great challenge for even the most experienced watchmakers.

The eagerly awaited competition task was revealed by Lange's director of product development, Anthony de Haas, on the last day. The participants have six months to design and build an acoustic timepiece. A basic movement will be provided to them for this purpose. "The development of an acoustic timepiece is one of the most demanding constructions in watchmaking," says de Haas of the task, and adds: "After the creative results of the past few years, I am optimistic that we can look forward to outstanding designs again this year." The entries will be judged by a panel of experts in November. The award ceremony will take place as part of an international press event in January 2019.

N E W M o d e l - Bovet Récital 22 Grand Récital

Limited Edition of 60 Movements - 9-day Flying Tourbillon - Tellurium-Orrery and Retrograde Perpetual Calendar

In 2016, Bovet unveiled the Récital 18 Shooting Star tourbillon, which revolutionized watchmaking design by combining its movement with a registered design asymmetrical case. A year later, Bovet reprised this celestial timepiece with the Récital 20 Astérium , which borrowed the Récital 18's innovative case, original architecture, and intuitive display of astronomical indications. The Récital 22 Grand Récital tourbillon forms the third chapter allowing us to observe the three heavenly bodies that set the pace of our lives: the sun, earth, and moon.

This grand astronomical theater has been presented by Bovet in a Tellurium-Orrery, with the sun represented by the flying tourbillon, whose carriage bridge evokes fiery rays. The striking hemispherical earth rotates on its own axis and shows the hours on a natural 24-hour cycle. Finally, a spherical moon orbits the earth according to the exact length of its synodic period, i.e. 29.53 days.

To accentuate the splendor of the sun, the tourbillon carriage has been raised above the surface of the movement. Its original patented construction is characterized by its central attachment, endowing the piece with exemplary chronometry, while achieving a peerless level of transparency. Meanwhile, the five arms of the titanium carriage bridge surround the regulating organ. This three-dimensional representation of the sun showcases the finish of the bridge's five arms, rounded by hand, which subtly frame the timepiece's celestial decoration. By rotating once every sixty seconds, the tourbillon indicates the seconds by a hand affixed directly to the carriage wheel and travels over a scaled twenty-second sector.

The earth is represented by a hemisphere on the Récital 22, the surface of which is adorned with an engraved and hand-painted map, on which the oceans, mountains, deserts, and forests are executed in painstaking detail. The difficulty of working on a hemispherical surface is compounded by the use of a technique unveiled by Bovet in 2017, in which the artisan incorporates luminescent substances into the miniature painting. In this way, the earth becomes a radiant highlight in the dark, as the earth itself appears in the heavens above. The artisan's work continues with extreme delicacy, applying several successive layers of transparent lacquer to the
globe's surface before it is polished. To enhance the sense of realism, the artist painted clouds and air currents onto the globe's surface. As they are separated from the earth's crust by the thick layers of lacquer, the clouds appear to be floating in mid air.

As in reality, the earth naturally performs one anti-clockwise rotation every 24 hours. At the base of the globe, a graduated scale displays the hour by means of a three-dimensional polished titanium hand, situated between the tourbillon and the globe.

The scale of the artisanal and artistic craftsmanship present on these hemispheres is reason enough to consider each of the 60 timepieces in this limited edition a unique piece. Yet Pascal Raffy wanted to offer collectors even more. He therefore wanted Bovet to allow collectors to choose the orientation of the painted world map so that the collector's chosen location would be positioned on the earth-sun axis when the timepiece displays midday. This customization option means that each movement and timepiece is assembled once the collector's special requests have been received. This customization also makes it possible to determine where it is currently nighttime in the world thanks to the black and white coloring of the ring surrounding the earth.

This concave circular indicator, widened at the bottom to display the hour, demonstrates the masterful skill of the micro-mechanics responsible for its manufacturing. The moon is represented by a sphere that makes a complete orbit once every 29.53 days exactly, which corresponds to the synodic period of our natural satellite. The high-precision mechanism that powers the moon and moonphase display, also visible on the Earth's concentric ring, means that it will register a discrepancy of just one day every 122 years. The sphere is divided into two parts: one black, while the second is engraved with the textured surface of the moon. The engraved sections of the second half are filled with a luminescent substance, which makes it possible to clearly see which part of the moon is directly illuminated by the Sun.

To bring further harmony to this celestial spectacle, the retrograde minute and power reserve indications are displayed on hemispherical sectors curved to mirror the globe. Sapphire glasses situated in their centers magnify the mechanisms underneath, each seemingly transcending the spatial confines of the case.

Lastly, a circular aperture is positioned on the left-hand side of the tourbillon carriage. Its metal bezel also contains a magnifying glass, which makes it possible to read the date displayed on a glass disk circulating on the lower section of the movement. To emphasize the date, a ring machined directly from solid luminescent material highlights the inner edge of the aperture. It is symmetrically positioned in relation to the upper cone ring and the power reserve wheel, which is made from the same material.

Reversing the timepiece and looking through its large sapphire crystal, the viewer beholds a vast bridge decorated with circular Côtes de Genève, centered around the tourbillon's axis. Various apertures open onto the hour, day, month, and leap-year indicators, and a glass date disk guided by the bridge, which is displayed on both sides of the movement. This combination
of indications acts in concert as a sort of mechanical brain that governs the perpetual calendar . This ensures optimum accuracy in the display and setting of the time reading andall the Tellurium functions.

Specially designed and developed for the Grand Récital, the perpetual calendar is brimming with innovative features, including the original addition of a patented, double-sided date disk display. It is driven by a retrograde mechanism with a micrometric rack, also patented, which optimizes operation while reducing the amount of required space. The abrupt accelerative and decelerative forces acting on the date disk, when combined with the inertia of its mineral crystal material, led the watchmakers to develop a regulator train that dissipates the energy when the disk retrogrades.

In addition to the traditional correctors used to adjust each indication individually, they designed and developed a pushpiece located between the upper lugs that simultaneously adjusts all the
timepiece's functions. Therefore, if the timepiece has been stopped for six days, for instance, this pushpiece can be simply pressed six times to perfectly adjust the perpetual calendar and Tellurium functions simultaneously.

Technical Specifications:
The case, in 18kt red gold or in platinum, measures 46.3mm x 19.6mm. It has double sapphire crystals and it is water resistant to 30 meters.

Movement is the Swiss manual-wind Bovet in-house caliber 17DM03-TEL beating at 18,000 vph and with a power reserve of 216 hours (nine days). A double-sided flying tourbillon was chosen to regulate this caliber. This patented construction improves chronometric performance by significantly reducing the lever arm at the point of attachment and intelligently distributing mass. The sprung balance and escapement are positioned on either side of the central attachment point in an a atypical architecture that also enhances the piece's aesthetics, as it renders the tourbillon's attachment to the movement practically invisible. Meanwhile a variable-inertia balance wheel, paired with a balance-spring manufactured in Bovet's workshops, ensures the accuracy of the movement. Functions are: hours (24hr), retrograde minutes, seconds on the double-sided flying tourbillon, precision moonphase, retrograde double-sided date, Power reserve. Retrograde perpetual calendar on the back.

It comes on a black full-grain alligator leather strap with an 18kt red or white gold buckle.

MSRP is $469,800 for the 18kt red gold version and $502,200 for the platinum version. They come with a five year warranty.

The winner of the most prestigious category, "Best of Show", will be presented with a Lange 1 Time Zone "Como Edition" that has been made specially for the occasion, with the coat-of-arms of the competition adorning the hand-engraved case back of the special-edition model in white gold. On the city ring of the time zone watch, Central European Time is represented by Como.

For Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid, this commitment reflects the company's deep-rooted passion for sophisticated mechanics and classic elegance. "Both in car construction and watchmaking, inventive spirit and inventiveness have repeatedly set milestones in terms of technology, design and craftsmanship. The enthusiasm for these achievements connects collectors and connoisseurs of precision mechanical timepieces with lovers of classic automobiles."

The Global eCommerce Platform Adds Watch Industry Depth to its Leadership Team with the Appointments of Herbert Gautschi and Susanne Hurni to Swiss Executive Team

WatchBox, the premiere global platform for pre-owned luxury watches, today announces the appointment of Patrik Hoffmann as the Executive Vice President of the company's Swiss division, Herbert Gautschi as its Vice President of Business Operations, and Susanne Hurni as the division's Vice President of Marketing. The expansion into Switzerland with a high-level team with invaluable experience in the Swiss watch industry, signals the next phase of strategic growth for WatchBox and reinforces the company's commitment to elevate and revolutionize the pre-owned luxury watch category.

Founded in 2017 by Danny Govberg, Liam Wee Tay and Justin Reis; WatchBox affirms that physical locations in key markets are critical to support its global ecommerce platform. The newly established Swiss division complements the buying, selling, and trading operations in the United States and Hong Kong, and serves as a bridge to the epicenter of the Swiss watch industry. Patrik Hoffmann, who served Ulysse Nardin in varied leadership roles for nearly 20 years, most recently as CEO, was tapped for the executive vice president role, following a dynamic threedecade career in the watch industry.

Hoffmann's tenure with Ulysse Nardin, and prior roles with Oris SA and the watch distribution company Swiss Prestige Ltd., granted him extensive experience in the Americas, Asia and other major markets for the luxury watch industry. He oversaw global sales and marketing efforts and steered Ulysse Nardin through continuous innovation, without losing sight of the brand's rich heritage or long-term objectives. With a thoughtful style of leadership, Hoffmann powerfully communicated a narrative of tradition, design, and technology that propelled both his career and the global profile of Ulysse Nardin, ultimately overseeing the acquisition by the Kering Group and a successful transition.

He brings to WatchBox a constant drive for innovation, relishes disruption and communicates his vision for the evolution of the watch category with passion and purpose. "The pre-owned timepiece segment has been long neglected and it is our vision to provide a professional service in pioneering change in the luxury watch industry," stated Hoffmann. "We are embracing technological tools, fulfilling the needs of today's informed consumer and visionary retailers."

Danny Govberg, co-founder and CEO of WatchBox shared, "Patrik brings considerable strength, knowledge and perspective of the watch industry to WatchBox. He worked alongside, collaborated with, and learned from one of the more creative watch entrepreneurs of our time, Rolf Schnyder; and he experienced the transition from a family business to a true global powerhouse. This experience is unmatched in our industry, enriching WatchBox's mission to drive change in the pre-owned category."

Susanne Hurni joins WatchBox Switzerland as its Vice President of Marketing, having served as the head of marketing and communication for Ulysse Nardin for more than 30 years. Hurni's extraordinary industry experience and proficiency in branding, communications, and public relations will be instrumental to the global growth of the WatchBox brand.

"We are delighted to welcome Patrik, Susanne, and Herbert to WatchBox's global team," remarked Amanda Ellison, President and Chief Operating Officer of WatchBox. "The Swiss team embodies all of the qualities I look for in a team. They bring talent and experience, operate with proficiency, creativity, passion and attention to detail. And they are unwaveringly committed to results."

Herbert Gautschi joins WatchBox Switzerland as its Vice President of Business Operations, bringing with him over 30 years of experience in the watch industry and a proficiency for organizational management, marketing, and sales, having worked extensively with major luxury brands throughout his career. Gautschi was instrumental in developing the Gucci Timepiece division in its formative years, served as CEO of a multi-client private watch manufacturer, founded NHC with master watchmaker Vincent Calabrese, and initiated the business plan and acquisition of Vincent Bérard SA by the Timex Group. Gautschi supported the re-launch of niche brand Julien Coudray 1518 in 2011 before founding his own company to design luxury consumer goods experiences worldwide. His considerable experience, creativity, business acumen and nimble approach are invaluable to WatchBox's Swiss expansion.
