Rare Examples from Richard Mille, Patek Philippe & Rolex Achieved Top Prices

At Antiquorum's November Auction


 
Antiquorum's November 8 auction of "Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces" totaled an impressive CHF 6,110,405. The outstanding and varied selection of 319 timepieces sold for a remarkable 123% by value with strong international competition from all corners of the globe including the United States, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Germany, as well as Switzerland.
 
The top highlight of the sale was the exceptional Richard Mille RM52/01 Skull Nanoceramic wristwatch (lot 301). The very fine tonneau-shaped wristwatch with one-minute tourbillon regulator featuring a skull on the dial sold for a noteworthy CHF 411,750.
 
Complicated wristwatches from Patek Philippe were also in high demand in the November auction. The Patek Philippe Ref. 2499 Fourth Series in Yellow Gold (lot 319), a very rare perpetual calendar chronograph, attracted the attention of collectors and sold for CHF 327,750; while the Patek Philippe Ref. 3450 Retailed by Beyer with Roman Leap Year Display in yellow gold (lot 318) created a bidding frenzy around the globe and sold to a U.S. bidder for a remarkable CHF 255,750, over double its high estimate.
 
Vintage Rolex timepieces commanded noteworthy prices. The Rolex Ref. 6062 Stelline in Pink Gold, an extremely rare chronometer wristwatch with triple date (lot 120) was bought by a U.S. bidder for CHF 315,750; and the collectible Rolex Ref. 6241 Paul Newman with Tropical Counters and Outer Track (lot 222) was acquired for CHF 153,750.  In addition, the Rolex Ref. 6240 So-Called Rolex Solo (lot 224) achieved CHF 129,750.
 
"We are delighted by the outcome for our November auction," said Julien Schaerer, Managing Director of Antiquorum. "As confirmed by today' sale, vintage timepieces from Rolex and Patek Philippe in close to new old stock condition continue to bring outstanding results."
 
Not to be outdone, important clock watches and pocket watches from major brands generated noteworthy results. The Patek Philippe Grande et Petite Sonnerie Clockwatch with Trip Minute repeating (lot 241) was highly coveted by collectors and sold to a Taiwanese bidder for an amazing CHF 219,750, over triple its high estimate. Also inspiring aggressive competition was the Recently Discovered Important Breguet Jump Hour Minute Repeater Sold to the Infante of Spain in 1818 (lot 199).  The large minute-repeating 18K gold pocket watch with jump hour and intermediary hammer repeating was acquired by the Breguet Museum for CHF 195,750, nearly twice its high estimate.
 
Other pocket watches also achieved noteworthy prices. The Courvoisier Exceptional Minute Repeating Guinand Type 1 Tourbillon Chronometer with Independent Dead Seconds (lot 203) sold for CHF 147,750, over double its low estimate; and the Patek Philippe Ref. 699 Minute Repeater & Perpetual Calendar with Special Order Outer Protecting Case (lot 240) sold for CHF 135,750 against a pre-auction estimate of CHF 75,000 95,000.
 
Audemars Piguet achieved an important result with its Royal Oak Concept CW1 Limited Edition (lot 297), selling for CHF 171,750.
 
Also achieving a notable price from Patek Philippe, the Patek Philippe Ref. 3970 /2 in Pink Gold (lot 92) sold to a UK bidder for over double its low estimate at CHF 99,750.
 
"Today's auction inspired highly competitive bidding from collectors all over the world," said Etienne Lemenager, Director & Watch Expert Antiquorum Geneva. "In particular, we have noticed increased strength from the U.S market that continues to assert itself as an important player in the collectible timepiece arena."
 
The anticipated Rolex Ref. 18148 Customized Day-Date set with diamonds and rubies formerly belonging to the renowned Indian Mystic and Guru known as 'Osho" (lot 280)  attracted worldwide attention from Osho fans and Rolex aficionados and sold for CHF 40,000.
 
Antiquorum looks forward to its next auction on December 15 in New York which will encompass an extraordinary selection of complicated Patek Philippe wristwatches including a Sealed Ref. 5213 Minute Repeater Retro Perpetual Calendar; a Ref. 5539 Sealed Tourbillon Minute Repeater with Black Enamel Dial; and a Ref. 5016 Tourbillon Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar.

Lot 301
RICHARD MILLE RM52/01 SKULL NANOCERAMIC .Made in a limited edition of 30 nano-ceramic pieces. Very fine, and unusual, tonneau-shaped and curved, nanoceramic, TZP (bezel and caseback)and 5N gold wristwatch with visible one-minute tourbillon regulator and a titanium Richard Mille Buckle. Accompanied by the original warranty, original fitted box and instructions.

LOT 319
PATEK PHILIPPE REF. 2499/100 FOURTH SERIES YELLOW GOLD. Made in 1981, sold on August 7th, 1981. Very fine and rare, 18K yellow gold wristwatch with round button chronograph, 30-minute register, perpetual calendar, moon phases and an 18K gold Patek Philippe buckle. Accompanied by the Extract from the Archives.
Sold for:  327,750 CHF


LOT 120
ROLEX REF. 6062 STELLINE PINK GOLD.  Made in 1951. Very fine and extremely rare, tonneau-shaped, selfwinding, water resistant, 18K pink gold Chronometer wristwatch with triple date, moon phases and "Super Oyster" crown.

LOT 318
PATEK PHILIPPE REF 3450, RETAILED BY BEYER ROMAN LEAP YEAR DISPLAY YELLOW. Made in 1984. Very fine and very rare, self-winding, 18K yellow gold wristwatch with perpetual calendar, moon phases, Roman numerals for the leap year indication and an 18k yellow gold Patek Philippe buckle. Accompanied by the Extract from the Archives.

LOT 241
PATEK PHILIPPE GRANDE & PETITE SONNERIE CLOCKWATCH WITH TRIP MINUTE REPEATING, retailed by Marenzeller's Wien. Made in 1893, sold on May 23rd, 1894. Extremely fine and exceptionally rare, 18K gold, two-train, grande and petite sonnerie striking keyless clockwatch with trip minute-repeating. Accompanied by a heavy 18K gold chain and the Extract from the Archives.

LOT 199
RECENTLY DISCOVERED IMPORTANT BREGUET JUMP HOUR MINUTE REPEATER SOLD TO THE INFANTE OF SPAIN IN 1818 Breguet, No. 3104, "Montre Or à Répétition à Minutes". Sold to Son Altesse L'Infant d'Espagne, Comte de la Moratalla par de Matschado, on April 21st, 1818, for the sum of 2,980 Francs. Very fine and extremely rare, large, minute-repeating, 18K gold pocket watch with jump-hours and Breguet's intermediary hammer repeating.

Exceptionally fine and probably unique, large and heavy, minute-repeating, two-train, independent dead-center seconds, 18K gold hunting-cased keyless pocket chronometer, with one-minute tourbillon regulator with pivoted detent escapement and amplitude-controlling device.
